Apple Screen Time vs Vidward for YouTube

The short answer

Apple Screen Time controls when and where a child can use YouTube on Apple devices. Vidward controls what appears inside YouTube in a computer browser.

Use Screen Time when the rule is "30 minutes" or "not after bedtime." Use Vidward when the rule is "no Shorts," "not this channel" or "only these channels." If your child uses both an iPhone and a Mac, you may need both.

What Screen Time controls

Apple's Screen Time guide lists device schedules, app limits, usage reports and blocks for apps, downloads and websites. With Family Sharing, a parent can manage a child's settings from their own Apple device.

For YouTube, those controls work around the app or site:

• set a daily limit for the YouTube app or an app group
• block the app during Downtime
• see how long the app or site was used
• block YouTube as an app or website
• use web content settings to limit adult sites or allow only chosen sites

This is strong device control. It works where Vidward does not, including the YouTube app on an iPhone or iPad.

The limit must be set to block. Apple says an app limit on a Mac only blocks the app after time runs out when Block at end of limit is selected. For Downtime, set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at Downtime. Without that switch, Apple shows a reminder but lets the child keep using the app. See Apple's guides for app limits and Downtime.

Apple's published Screen Time controls do not expose YouTube channels, videos, title words, Shorts or recommendations. When the YouTube app is allowed, its own feed remains in charge of what fills the permitted time.

What Vidward controls

Vidward is a browser extension plus a parent dashboard. It works on the YouTube site in a protected browser on a computer.

A parent can block channels, single videos and title words. Vidward can remove Shorts, Trending, comments and live chat, keep autoplay off, set video length limits or show only approved channels. It also reports watch activity to the parent dashboard.

Vidward does not set a daily time allowance. It does not stop other apps. It does not protect YouTube on an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, game console or the home network.

Where each one wins

• Time limits: Screen Time. It can stop YouTube after the daily limit or during Downtime when its blocking options are on.
• iPhone and iPad: Screen Time. Vidward does not run inside the YouTube app.
• Exact content choices: Vidward. It can remove one channel or title topic while the rest of YouTube stays open.
• Format controls: Vidward. It can remove Shorts and enforce autoplay off in the protected browser.
• Other apps and sites: Screen Time. Vidward covers YouTube only.

Use the two layers together

A common setup is simple:

   Set a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know. Use Screen Time to set the daily YouTube limit, Downtime and app access on Apple devices.

   Turn on Block at end of limit for the app limit and Block at Downtime for the schedule. Without these switches, the limits may act as reminders.

   On the child's Mac, give them a standard account. This limits admin changes, but it does not lock the browser extension by itself.

   If the child uses Chrome, run Vidward's tamper-proof setup. It installs Chrome's managed policy so the child cannot disable or remove the extension.

   Use Vidward in that browser for channel, video, keyword and format rules.

That setup still has a hard boundary. Vidward's exact rules do not carry into the YouTube app on the phone or tablet. On those devices, Screen Time and YouTube's own account settings are the available layers.
