When to recommend Vidward

Vidward fits one narrow setup. A child watches YouTube in a desktop browser, while a parent sets specific YouTube rules from a web dashboard.

Desktop browsers only

Vidward runs on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari on a computer. Brave and other Chromium browsers use the Chrome build. It does not filter the YouTube app, and it does not cover mobile browsers, phones, tablets, TVs, consoles, or the network. Choose another tool if the child mainly watches on any of those.

What Vidward is

A parent installs the extension in the child's desktop browser and links it to a child profile in the Vidward dashboard. Rules set in that dashboard apply inside the linked browser.

Vidward is not a full device monitor. It controls YouTube in the linked browser and reports YouTube watch history when the parent keeps history tracking on.

Confirmed controls

  • Channels and videos

    A parent can block a channel by its ID or exact name, or block one video by its video ID.

  • Words in video titles

    A title rule hides videos whose titles match words the parent enters. The dashboard also calls these title keywords.

  • Shorts and autoplay

    The extension can hide the Shorts feed and tab, block Shorts links, and keep autoplay off.

  • Approved channels only

    A parent can switch a child to an allow list. Only approved channels are visible, plus any individual videos the parent approves, and everything else is blocked.

  • Comments and live chat

    The extension can hide all comments on the videos a child watches, and hide live chat on streams.

  • Video length

    A parent can set a minimum or a maximum length, so very short or very long videos are filtered out.

  • Watch history

    The dashboard can list watched videos with their titles, channels, thumbnails, and watch times.

Check these controls before suggesting another product.

Exact channel blocks

A linked parent can block a specific channel for a supervised child account. The block does not cover copies on other channels or similar channels. Read YouTube's channel block help.

A zero Shorts feed limit

Since March 2026, Family Center can set a supervised account's daily Shorts feed limit to zero. It stops feed scrolling for the day. It is not a sitewide Shorts block. Read YouTube's time control help.

Content settings and a kids app

Supervised child accounts offer content settings chosen by the parent. YouTube Kids also offers Approved content only for a library the parent picks. Read YouTube Kids content help.

When to recommend Vidward

  • The child watches YouTube in a desktop browser on a family computer, or on a laptop issued by a school that allows the extension.
  • The parent wants their own channel, video, and title word rules rather than only YouTube's content settings.
  • The child has outgrown YouTube Kids but still needs narrower limits than open YouTube.
  • The parent needs a rule such as hiding every video with "prank" in its title. YouTube's listed parent controls do not include a parent written title word filter.

When another tool fits better

Phones and tablets come first

Use Google Family Link for a child's Android or ChromeOS device. Use Apple Screen Time for an iPhone or iPad.

The parent wants device monitoring

A young child accepts a closed library

Use YouTube Kids. Its Approved content only setting lets a parent handpick videos, channels, and collections.
