How to block YouTube on Xfinity WiFi

The Xfinity app does not have a YouTube switch

Xfinity's current app can turn on Parental Controls for a person. That forces Google SafeSearch, Bing SafeSearch, and YouTube Restricted Mode. It does not block YouTube, and Xfinity says you cannot add a specific website to the app's Parental Controls list.

For no YouTube at night, use Downtime on the child's profile. It blocks all home internet for the assigned devices during the schedule.

Some Xfinity Gateways still expose website blocking in the local Admin Tool. That route is a domain block with the same gaps and side effects as DNS.

Create a person and assign the child's devices

   Open the Xfinity app and select the WiFi tab.

   Under Connected to your WiFi, add a person for the child. Give the profile a clear name.

   Select Assign devices and add every computer, phone, tablet, TV, and console the child uses at home.

   Check the assigned list after each device reconnects. Xfinity settings apply only to devices in the profile.

Use Downtime to block access at night

   Open the child's person page. Select the settings gear, then Create Schedule next to Downtime.

   Choose Bedtime or name a custom schedule. Pick the days, start time, and end time.

   Select Apply and confirm that Downtime appears on the profile.

   Start a YouTube video before the scheduled time. Wait for buffered video to finish, then confirm that the app and site lose internet access.

Downtime stops all outside internet on the assigned devices. Local printers and other home devices may still work. Xfinity also says a current session may not stop at once.

The rule covers only your private home network. Cellular data, a public Xfinity hotspot, another wifi network, or a phone hotspot remains outside it.

Know what Xfinity Parental Controls change

Turning on Parental Controls for the person does not remove YouTube. It turns on YouTube Restricted Mode and safe search settings. Xfinity also warns that cached content may stay available for up to 24 hours.

Restricted Mode filters a limited set of videos. It is not a named channel block and it is not the same as a downtime rule.

Use the Gateway Admin Tool only if your model offers site blocking

Xfinity says some gateways expose website blocking at http://10.0.0.1. Sign in from the home network and look for Parental Controls and Managed Sites or Website Blocking. The menu differs by gateway, so do not invent a path if the setting is absent.

Expect this to fail on YouTube. Managed Sites is a URL filter, and URL filters on consumer gateways inspect the address in plain HTTP traffic. YouTube is served entirely over HTTPS, so the gateway cannot see which page is being requested. You can add every YouTube domain, save it, get no error, and watch the site load normally.

Keep YouTube with account or computer rules

Google now lets a linked parent block an exact channel for a supervised child account. Family Center can also set the daily Shorts feed limit to zero.
