How to block YouTube on a school laptop
Parents usually cannot change a school-managed laptop. Check who owns the controls, what to ask the school for, and what you can set at home.

If the school owns the laptop, the school owns the setting
Most parents cannot block YouTube on a school-managed laptop. The school's administrator controls site rules, browser extensions, and device policy.
Trying to remove that management can break the device agreement and may lock the student out of class tools. Ask the school for a change instead.
If your family owns the laptop and only uses it for schoolwork, you can set the rules yourself. Jump to the family-owned section below.
Check whether the laptop is managed
Do not rely on the logo on the lid. Check the browser and the operating system.
- Chrome: open the menu. Managed by your organization at the bottom means an administrator controls Chrome.
chrome://managementshows the same status. Google has a guide to checking Chrome management. - Windows: open Settings, then Accounts, then Access work or school. A connected school account may apply device rules. Microsoft documents the current Windows path.
- Mac: open System Settings, then General. A Device Management panel or school profile means the Mac may be managed. Apple says profiles that cannot be removed need help from the school administrator.
Google says a managed Chrome browser can have extensions installed and features restricted by its administrator. A managed Chromebook shows a managed device icon when you select the time.

What to ask the school for
Send a short request to the teacher or district IT team. Give them the student name, device type, and the times when YouTube causes a problem.
Ask these questions:
- Does the school allow YouTube for this student's account outside class?
- Does it enforce YouTube Restricted Mode or an approved video list?
- Can it block
youtube.comfor one student, one group, or a set time? - Does the school need YouTube open for assignments on another site?
Chrome administrators can block URLs on managed browsers and ChromeOS devices. The school may choose a narrower rule because teachers use YouTube links in class. A clear request helps the administrator pick the right scope.
Do not install around school policy
If the school blocks extension installs, Vidward cannot run there. Do not try to bypass the restriction. Use the school request and a home device you control.
What you can control at home
You control the home network, but a network block is broad. It can stop YouTube while the laptop uses your wifi. It will not follow the device to school or a mobile hotspot. It may also block YouTube for everyone else at home.
If your router or DNS service supports a per-device block, target the school laptop and test class sites afterward. Do not change software, certificates, or management profiles on a school-owned device.
Often the cleanest plan is to keep the school laptop for schoolwork and move personal YouTube use to a family computer. Your rules can hold on the device you own.
If your family owns the school laptop
Use the normal method for its operating system and browser:
- Block YouTube on Windows with Family Safety or a PC-wide hosts file.
- Block YouTube on a Mac in Safari with Screen Time.
- Block YouTube on a personal Chromebook with Family Link.
- Block YouTube in Chrome for a supervised Google account.
